Marije Westra obtained a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design Engineering and a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Delft University of Technology. After completing her studies, she worked for a company that develops instruments and equipment for eye surgery.
As a Project Engineer at the ‘New Product Development Instruments’ department, she took part in the design process and wrote the documentation to build the technical file.
During her graduation project, Marije looked into how electrosurgery can be made more suitable for use in developing countries. After creating an overview of the problems surrounding surgery and medical devices in developing countries, she focused on the problems associated with electrosurgery and electrosurgical units that also exist in our western world. To gain more insight in the use of electrosurgery, she for instance attended various types of operations at LUMC. Based on the list of requirements that could be derived from this analysis phase, she made a redesign of the electrosurgical unit.
