In Australia, there is the possibility to apply for a so-called innovation patent, which is in many ways similar to the utility model.
However, the Australian government decided some time ago to phase out this type of patent from 26 August 2021. Innovation patents filed by 25 August 2021 will remain in effect until they expire. This means that current patent holders will not be disadvantaged.
Incidentally, applications for divisional innovation patents can also be filed after 25 August, provided the parent application was filed by 25 August.
